GB Lights passed its investment minimum threshold of £1.6 million last week, and they have already been getting ready to install the energy efficiency LED lighting systems — across 3 hectares of Global Berry’s glasshouse site at Bradon, Somerset — that will be funded by this investment.

New strawberry plants have been planted, of the ‘Ever-Bearer’ variety. This variety can continually produce fruit for 5 months instead of the shorter bearing period of 2 months (as is the case for the variety it uses in the rest of its glasshouses). The LED lights will give the light levels the Ever-Bearer strawberries need to flower through the winter until early spring. The lighting control program will also continually monitor the natural light levels and supplement the LED lighting only as required so that energy use is minimised.

By installing these energy efficient LED lights — GB Lights — will help reduce our reliance on imported strawberries, enable Global Berry to extend their growing season and help increase yields at lower environmental cost.

The pictures below show the strawberries planted at the Bradon site, which will become the first winter strawberries to be grown by Global Berry once the LED lights are installed.
