Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s second investment raise is focussed on green retrofit, an essential area of its climate action plans. Its own building estate accounts for 80% of the council’s carbon emissions, so it wants to install green upgrades including new solar panels, battery storage, LED lighting and air source heat pumps for council-owned homes, schools, and community buildings.

To get an idea of the benefits this type of green upgrades can bring, this week Cllr Rowan Ree, Cabinet Member for Finance and Reform, visited Hammersmith Academy in Cathnor Road, Shepherds Bush, that has already been upgraded to find out more about what was done, and the impact it has had.

The school had more than 400 solar panels installed on its roof last summer. And, since then, Hammersmith & Fulham Council has been helping the secondary school reduce its carbon footprint and improve the building’s overall energy efficiency rating.

Their investment in solar panels is expected to pay for itself within four years, and help reduce electricity bills by £50,000 a year.

After visiting the site, Cllr Ree said:

“It’s schemes like these that show just how effective solar panels can be in helping to cut energy costs and reduce our carbon footprint at the same time.

Through our innovative Green Investment scheme, Hammersmith & Fulham Council is set to roll out more clean energy schemes like this one to other schools, libraries and council-owned community buildings in the borough.”

H&F Green Investment Phase 2 is open for investment now, offering returns of 4.6% interest a year.
